This position will oversee the technical administrative functions of all PHI lab spaces in our Sunnyvale office location to optimize operations, increase efficiencies, and ensure regulatory and safety compliance across all labs. The lab manager will be responsible for both on the ground operational tasks, such as coordinating equipment installation, overseeing equipment maintenance, and managing lab inventory, as well as larger organizational duties, such as ensuring environmental health and safety compliance. Ideal candidates will work onsite with PHI lab scientists to understand and directly address lab needs. This role requires technical scientific knowledge and the administrative acumen to develop, implement, and streamline processes, procedures, and policies underpinning the activity within the laboratories, as well as the ability to forge strong relationships and collaborate across departments as the role will serve as the main conduit between the lab researchers and various vendors and company stakeholders such as IT, building management, and HR.

 Policy & Compliance Management 
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory compliance to all relevant regulatory standards including, but not limited to, Cal/OSHA and ANSI. 
  • Develop, standardize and execute safety & compliance documentation and procedures such as: 
    • Laser Safety Program 
    • Laser Inventory & Classification 
    • Chemical Hygiene Plan 
    • Maintain and manage standard operating procedures (SOPs) relating to ▪ Lasers 
      • Chemicals 
      • Cryogenics 
      • Compressed air & gas 
  • Oversee lab access & safety training 
    • Oversee, orient and train students, technical staff, and collaborators on laboratory SOPs & safety procedures. Serve as technical support for adhering to equipment protocols. 
    • Ensure training is compliant to regulation standards 
    • Review and update training program as needed 
    • Monitor & review lab operators to determine any safety deficiencies and retraining needs. 
    • Work with building management and HR for issuing and maintaining lab access 
  • Conduct periodic review of lab spaces, PPE, equipment, and procedures, and develop and execute plans to address any deficiencies 
  • Other projects as assigned or deemed necessary 

Lab Operational Management 
  • Work onsite to ensure the laboratories are well maintained, appropriately stocked and functioning at maximum efficiency. 
  • Manage the operational needs of the labs, including coordinating with vendors & building management to ensure timely equipment maintenance such as: 
    • Water testing 
    • Filter changing 
    • Chemical & gas supplies 
    • Inventory coordination & management 
  • Implement and oversee the disposal of hazardous materials and waste, ensuring that it adheres to environmental safety standards and practices. 
  • Assist with coordination of equipment installation including collaborating with vendors and building management on any construction needs. 
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment. Initiate external service agreements after researching vendors, services provided and costs. Work with vendors on issuing RMAs and shipping equipment back. - Research products and pricing on equipment purchases and make recommendations to the lab heads. 
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration between the laboratory and other departments, external partners, and regulatory bodies to support organizational objectives and compliance. 
  • Coordinate with building management, contractors, and lab scientists to ensure lab modifications are finished up to spec and in a timely manner. 



  • Bachelor’s in physics, electrical engineering or similar area of study 
  • Master’s in physics, electrical engineering or similar area of study preferred 
  • 5-7 years’ experience in a laboratory setting 
  • 3+ years’ experience operating class 3B & 4 lasers in a laboratory setting 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the function and operations of optical laboratories including thorough knowledge of regulatory standards. 
  • Extensive experience developing, implementing, and executing environmental health and safety programs and protocols for lab spaces 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to interact with a wide array of stakeholders 
  • Ability to learn and synthesize new information and data 
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems with a solution driven mind frame 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize work 
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skill
