The Assistant Research Engineer, MEI Laboratory is a global, full-time, field-based, or on-campus colleague belonging to the Medical and Health Informatics (MEI) Laboratory who is jointly responsible for the execution of team projects.

The responsibilities of the Assistant Research Engineer, MEI Laboratory are to contribute to NTT Research, Inc (NTT RI) in its ability to conduct basic research and advance technologies for positive societal changes; and, to envision and realize longer-term goals with the potential for deeper and broader impacts expected to “Upgrade Reality” for the future of humankind.

  • The Assistant Research Engineer, MEI Laboratory will primarily be responsible for the development of software and hardware tools that accelerate research activities guided by researchers at the MEI Laboratories. 
  • Develop data collection software that supports physiological experiments using a variety of medical sensors.
  • Customize and test existing or prototype medical devices in our dry lab.
  • Support clinical study partnerships. 
  • Manage basic infrastructure to store HIPPA compliant data according to such guidelines as implemented by NTT and its partners.
  • Manage software tools, licenses, and subscriptions (including paper subscriptions).
  • Manage on-premise and cloud servers in cooperation with the IT support team or other vendors.
  • Serve on internal technical teams that include IT (for MEI Laboratory), interdisciplinary teams of medical experts, AI experts, and others.
  • Maintain effective and appropriate communications and collaboration among NTT colleagues.
  • Ensure compliance with all internal/external SOPs/Rules/Regulations. 
  • Contribute to MEI team projects and activities, and serve as needed to support NTT RI leadership to develop broader institutional strategies. 


A bachelor’s degree in computer science or other related engineering degrees with 3 or more years of relevant experience is required. 

R&D experience with clinical studies or with the mining of physiological data is desirable.

Technical and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Software development experience is required (e.g., python, SQL, etc.)
  • Work experience in sensor technology is required.
  • Data management experience using infrastructure would be considered a plus (e.g., AWS, GCP, etc.).
  • Familiarity with data analytics technologies or artificial intelligence would be considered a plus.
  • Clinical study experience is a definite plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required. 
  • Excellent and demonstrated interpersonal skills: the ability to understand and respond to multiple external and internal demands, manage and handle conflict constructively is required; and, the ability to work within a matrixed, multi-disciplinary team to foster strong professional relationships aligned with NTT RI objectives is also required. 
  • Flexibility and openness to new opportunities; adaptability to organizational change. 
  • Ability to problem-solve and network throughout the organization to identify solutions. 
  • Be a self-starter, be accountable, and have a sense of conviction to delivering quality results that have an impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly adapt and utilize new digital technology and other resources.
  • Flexibility to travel by air is required (to attend scientific meetings/conferences; attend NTT RI on-campus meetings, etc.).
